Many people will be familiar with the term ‘Berber rugs’ but will probably be thinking specifically about Beni Ourain rugs. These are the white shaggy wool pile rugs with simple darker geometric designs as below. These should be all made from 100% wool, hand knotted and undyed like the ones we have here at The London Persian Rug company.
They are indeed Berber rugs but just one of many! There are many different tribes of Berber people of North Africa all of which have unique rug traditions and designs. Thus the Beni Ourain rugs are made by and named after Beni Ourain people from the Rif Mountains near Taza in Southern Morocco. These were made popular during the modernist era by architects such a Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto as their simple patterns complimented their sleek minimalist furniture. They continue to be hugely popular today.
They are a great addition to any household and because of their paired back aesthetic will go with any type of decor. We have plenty here at the warehouse so book in an appointment to see them and many other styles of luxury rugs!
