Fringes are almost always the first area on an Oriental or Persian handmade carpet or rug to show signs of wear. The fringe is
simply an extension of the warp and weft base that forms the foundation of each carpet. When the weaving process is complete, each knotted piece of silk or wool is cut from the loom and the excess strands are knotted and finished – creating the fringe, or ‘tassel’ as it is commonly known.
When the fringes begin to fray, often coming loose from the stopping stitch used to hold down the knots onto the piece, the
knots previously held in place can come loose and start to erode the pile of the rug from each end.
At this point it is essential that these fraying ends and fringes are attended to quickly. It is much easier to apply a new stopping
stitch, identical to what would originally been used to finish the rug or carpet, than it is to re-build and re-weave sections of the
end which have been allowed to deteriorate and come apart.
This process is called a ‘stop-end’ or a ‘level and secure’ repair, and creates a new fringed end that stops any further deterioration. A relatively simple and straightforward process that we daily provide for our many clients across the UK.
Re-weaving and re-building threadbare areas of all Oriental and Persian carpets, rugs and runners is our speciality. We use highly
skilled repairers and restorers to carefully re-weave threadbare areas or extensively worn sections. Following the exact design of
the original piece, we apply new colour-matched wools, weaving the knots into the foundations of the rug to rebuild the pile and
strengthen the damaged part.
The skill of our technicians means that holes and tears are seamlessly re-constructed and invisibly repaired – with no repair or restoration being too large or too small. A hole may require the foundations to be established again before applying new knots to the pile. For this we construct a warp and weft foundation (usually constructed with cotton, wool or silk), applying the correct tension to then re-apply the pile and rebuild the design.
Antique Oriental and Persian rug repair and restoration is one of our core services. We are noted for our ability to restore even the most threadbare antique carpets and rugs, restoring colour, reweaving holes, repairing sides and fringes, and re-piling damaged areas in the exact weave and colour of the piece.
We have completed many restoration projects for very large Persian carpets, as well as many smaller but equally precious
rugs. Many of the carpets and rugs that we restore not only have sizeable economic value, but often hold an enormous amount of sentimental value to their custodians, and it is with this in mind that we take on the restoration of each piece.
