Persian Rug Cleaning – How Often Should You Do It?

Advice

Published: 29 May 2026

The Short Answer

A genuine handmade Persian rug should receive professional Persian rug cleaning every three to five years under normal household conditions. Between professional cleans, regular at-home maintenance – gentle vacuuming, prompt attention to spills and periodic rotation – will keep the rug in excellent condition and extend the intervals between specialist washes.

That is the general guidance, but the right frequency depends on several factors: where the rug is placed, how much foot traffic it receives, whether you have children or pets, and the materials from which it is woven.

Understanding these variables is important, because Persian rug cleaning that happens too infrequently risks permanent damage, but cleaning too aggressively or too often can be equally harmful.

Why Persian Rug Cleaning Matters More Than You Think

A handmade Persian rug is constructed from natural fibres, typically wool, sometimes silk, with a cotton or wool foundation. These materials are remarkably durable when properly cared for, but they are also organic, which means they respond to their environment over time.

Dust and fine grit are the primary enemies. They work their way down through the pile and settle at the base of the knots, where foot traffic grinds them against the fibres. Over months and years, this abrasion weakens the wool from within, dulling the colour, thinning the pile and gradually compromising the structural integrity of the rug.

The damage is invisible at first, which is precisely why it catches so many owners off guard. By the time a rug looks visibly dirty or worn, the underlying deterioration is already well advanced.

Professional Persian rug cleaning removes this embedded grit in a way that domestic vacuuming alone cannot. It is not a cosmetic treatment. It is an essential part of preserving the rug’s condition, appearance and long-term value.

The Recommended Cleaning Schedule

Every one to two weeks: vacuum gently. Use a low-suction setting or a canister vacuum without a beater bar. Vacuum in the direction of the pile, not against it. Avoid vacuuming the fringes, as these are particularly vulnerable to being pulled or tangled. Regular vacuuming lifts surface dust and prevents it from migrating deeper into the pile.

Every six to twelve months: rotate the rug. Turning the rug 180 degrees ensures that foot traffic and sunlight exposure are distributed evenly, preventing uneven wear patterns and localised fading. This is especially important for rugs in south-facing rooms or high-traffic areas such as hallways and living rooms.

Every three to five years: professional Persian rug cleaning. This is the most important interval. A specialist hand-clean removes the deep-set grit, oils, allergens and residues that domestic maintenance cannot reach. It also revives the natural lustre of the wool, refreshes the colours and restores the softness and resilience of the pile.

Immediately: address spills as they happen. Blot (never rub!) with a clean, dry cloth. For anything beyond water or a simple food spill, seek professional advice before applying any cleaning product. Many common household cleaners contain chemicals that can permanently damage natural dyes or strip the lanolin from wool fibres.

When Persian Rug Cleaning Should Happen More Frequently

The three-to-five-year guideline assumes a rug in a typical adult household with moderate foot traffic. Several factors can shorten that interval significantly.

Pets are the most common reason for more frequent Persian rug cleaning. Animal hair, dander and occasional accidents introduce contaminants that embed themselves in the pile and can cause odour, staining and fibre degradation if left untreated. A rug in a household with dogs or cats may benefit from professional cleaning every one to two years.

Children bring their own set of challenges – food spills, drink spills, muddy shoes and the general unpredictability of young hands and feet. Rugs in family homes with small children typically need professional attention every two to three years.

High-traffic placement accelerates the accumulation of grit and wear. A rug in a hallway, entrance or busy living room will need cleaning more often than one in a seldom-used guest bedroom or study.

Allergies are another consideration. Persian rugs can harbour dust mites, pollen and other allergens deep within the pile. If anyone in the household suffers from allergies or respiratory conditions, more frequent professional cleaning (every one to two years), can make a meaningful difference to indoor air quality.

Why Specialist Hand-Cleaning Is the Only Safe Method

It is important to distinguish between specialist Persian rug cleaning and the services offered by generic carpet cleaning companies. The two are not interchangeable, and using the wrong method on a handmade rug can cause irreversible damage.

A genuine handmade Persian rug should never be steam-cleaned, machine-washed or treated with industrial carpet-cleaning chemicals. These methods are designed for synthetic, machine-made floor coverings and can cause wool to shrink, dyes to bleed, and foundations to weaken or distort. The damage is often catastrophic and, in many cases, irreparable.

Specialist hand-cleaning is an entirely different process. The rug is washed individually by hand using traditional techniques and gentle, organic shampoos that protect the natural lanolin in the wool and preserve the integrity of the dyes. Comprehensive dust extraction removes fine particles from deep within the pile without harming the knots or fibres. The rug is then dried slowly and naturally – never heat-dried – before being inspected and returned. This is the only Persian rug cleaning method appropriate for a quality handmade piece, and it is the method that will preserve its beauty, structural integrity and value for decades to come.

The Cost of Not Cleaning

Owners sometimes delay professional Persian rug cleaning because the rug looks fine to the naked eye, or because they worry about the cost. Both concerns are understandable, but both are misplaced.

A handmade Persian rug is an investment, often one of the most valuable furnishings in a home. The cost of a professional hand-clean every few years is modest relative to the value of the piece it protects. Neglecting regular cleaning, on the other hand, leads to accelerated wear, dulled colours, compacted pile and the gradual accumulation of damage that becomes exponentially more expensive to address the longer it is left.

Think of it in the same terms as servicing a quality watch or maintaining a classic car. The cost of regular, preventative care is always a fraction of the cost of restoration after years of neglect. A rug that receives professional Persian rug cleaning at appropriate intervals will look better, feel better and retain significantly more of its value than one that has been left to fend for itself.
